History has been made at the Vatican with the election of Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost as the new pope now known as Pope Leo XIV.
Born in Chicago and having served for two decades in Peru, Pope Leo becomes the first American to ascend to the papacy.
Known for his modest demeanor and described as “reserved and discreet,” the newly appointed pope is being widely viewed as a centrist, with his full positions on major global and political issues still coming into focus.
Following in the footsteps of Pope Francis, Pope Leo XIV maintains strong commitments to social justice, including support for migrants, the poor, and climate action. He once stated, “the bishop is not supposed to be a little prince sitting in his kingdom.”
But it’s not just his recent statements that are drawing attention. Social media users have begun unearthing years-old posts from his X (formerly Twitter) account, revealing consistent advocacy and strong critiques of figures associated with the Trump administration.
In February 2025, for example, Pope Leo shared an op-ed titled, "JD Vance is wrong: Jesus doesn't ask us to rank our love for others," which directly challenged the Ohio senator’s ideology.
His past feed also includes a 2018 retweet that read, "There is nothing remotely Christian, American, or morally defensible about a policy that takes children away from their parents and warehouses them in cages. This is being carried out in our name and the shame is on us all."
Another tweet Pope Leo retweeted slammed Donald Trump's infamous “bad hombres” comment, saying it fueled “racism and nativism.”
Additionally, he shared support for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program and retweeted a prayer for George Floyd in 2020.
His 2017 social media activity also shows a retweet urging then-President Trump to take real action on climate change.
Now, as the pontiff assumes the highest position in the Catholic Church, his old tweets have sparked renewed public discussion, both criticism and applause.
One social media user commented, “Excellent job of maintaining continuity by picking another Pope who personally hates JD Vance.”
Though the Vatican has not commented on these resurfaced posts, it’s clear Pope Leo XIV’s values online and off are already making waves.
