The first teaser for Eddington, Ari Aster’s latest film, has been released by A24 ahead of its world premiere at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. The modern Western features a high-profile cast including Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, Emma Stone, Austin Butler, and Luke Grimes.

Set in May 2020, Eddington is positioned against the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic and introduces a fictional town in New Mexico where tensions escalate. According to the official synopsis, “a standoff between a small-town sheriff (Phoenix) and mayor (Pascal) sparks a powder keg as neighbour is pitted against neighbour.”

The teaser features characters engaged in discussions about pandemic conspiracies and local distrust, providing a commentary on how misinformation and fear fractured communities during the global crisis. Stone plays a pivotal role in the unfolding conflict, with a supporting cast that includes Deirdre O’Connell, Micheal Ward, Amélie Hoeferle, Clifton Collins Jr., and William Belleau.

Eddington marks Aster’s fourth feature with A24, following the success of Hereditary and Midsommar, and the more divisive reception of Beau Is Afraid in 2023. Joaquin Phoenix returns to collaborate with Aster after his role in Afraid, and the director has praised the actor for his dedication to deeply challenging each script.

“Having now worked with him, I understand why he is so reluctant to jump onto anything,” Aster said in an interview. “He really puts all of himself into whatever he’s doing.”

The film is set to open in competition at Cannes, running from 13 to 24 May, with a wider theatrical release scheduled for 18 July in the United States. UK release details are expected to follow.
