
Ioannis Vasilopoulos, a legendary album cover designer renowned for his work with bands like Bon Jovi and Deep Purple, has passed away at the age of 66. His family shared the heartbreaking news in an obituary posted on an online tribute page.
“We announce with heavy hearts the passing of Ioannis, our beloved artist, husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle, and friend,” the family wrote. They found comfort in knowing that Ioannis was reunited with his parents and other loved ones who had passed before him. The tribute also acknowledged the tremendous outpouring of love from fans of his artwork.
The obituary continued, describing the designer’s eagerness for future projects that he was unable to complete before his death. "As a family, we have been tasked to continue this work and that is what we are going to do," it read, emphasizing that his artistic energy would live on through his legacy.
Ioannis was survived by his wife Lisa, daughter Maria, son-in-law Conor, grandchildren Henry and Jack, and brother George. His family plans to hold an intimate funeral at a Greek Orthodox Church on April 11.
Born in Athens, Greece, Ioannis emigrated to the United States in 1967 and developed a passion for animation and music. He designed over 350 album covers, collaborating with iconic rock bands like Bon Jovi, Deep Purple, and Skid Row. His artistic journey also included directing his first MTV music video and working on high-profile projects with major record labels like Sony and Universal.
Tributes have poured in from fans and industry peers alike, with Patrick Prince, editor of Goldmine Magazine, calling Ioannis “a wonderfully generous person” and praising his limitless talent.
