The Handmaid’s Tale has introduced a game-changing development in season 6 with the arrival of New Bethlehem, a reformist colony proposed by Commander Lawrence.
The controversial new community is designed to offer a less oppressive alternative to Gilead’s theocratic rule, raising major questions about the regime’s future.
New Bethlehem is Lawrence’s attempt to undo some of the damage caused by Gilead’s brutal policies. Although a founding architect of the regime, Lawrence has become disillusioned, especially after the death of his wife. His vision for New Bethlehem includes abandoning the Handmaid system and granting women greater personal freedom—unprecedented steps in Gilead.
Unlike previous revolts or resistance efforts, Lawrence seeks to change Gilead from within. New Bethlehem serves as both a political experiment and a safe haven for those seeking reform.
A crucial ally in the project is Serena Joy Waterford. Once a key figure in Gilead’s formation, Serena has become a more complex character, now leaning towards moderate reforms. By aligning with her, Lawrence hopes to use her popularity to legitimise New Bethlehem and win over sceptics.
Actor Bradley Whitford, who portrays Lawrence, explained that the settlement also serves an economic purpose. He believes a modernised Gilead model can attract investment and prosper, ultimately surpassing the outdated regime in both wealth and influence.
Although the exact location of New Bethlehem remains undisclosed, it is believed to be near Boston, allowing Lawrence to maintain influence over Gilead’s core while establishing this bold new initiative.
