PDMA issues rain alert for hilly districts

The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a new rain alert, forecasting intermittent rainfall beginning from Tuesday night in the mountainous districts of the province, with the weather system expected to persist until April 11.

According to PDMA, thunderstorms and intermittent rain are likely in the upper districts including Chitral, Dir, Swat, Kohistan, Shangla, Battagram, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Malakand, Buner, Bajaur, Mohmand, Khyber, Orakzai, Kurram, Waziristan, Peshawar, Charsadda, Nowshera, Swabi, Bannu, Karak, and Kohat during this period.

PDMA has issued an official advisory to all district administration to remain alert and take preemptive measures to address any untoward incidents caused by the rain including urban flooding and landslides.

They have been instructed to ensure the availability of both heavy and light machinery to respond promptly to any emergency situations.

PDMA has also issued a public warning, stating that people should stay away from electric wires, old and crumbling buildings, signboards, and billboards during the rains.

Farmers are advised to plan their activities based on weather forecast. Tourists and local residents in sensitive upper areas should remain informed of weather conditions and take precautionary measures.

Messages should be communicated to local populations in regional languages in sensitive districts and in case of road blockages, all concerned departments should work for the restoration of road links and provide alternate routes for traffic.

The PDMA Director General advised tourists to check weather and road conditions before heading to tourist spots and may contact PDMA's helpline for updates.

The Emergency Operations Center is fully active, and the public is encouraged to report any emergencies by calling the toll-free helpline 1700, said PDMA spokesperson.
