Senate panel reviews progress on dams, K-4 projects

ISLAMABAD:

The Senate Standing Committee on Planning and Development directed the Planning Commission on Thursday to remove Kalabagh dam from the documents and presentations regarding the proposal for the construction of projects.

The committee met here with its chairperson Quratul Ain Marri in the chair, to discuss various development projects, water resources, status of dams and Karachi's water issues. The chair questioned the proposal for the construction of Kalabagh Dam, saying that three assemblies had opposed it.

The committee was informed that 15% of the work of the Bhasha Diamer Dam and 57.77% work of the K-4 project had been completed. The committee stressed the need for conserving water resources and mitigating the effects of climate change.

The meeting also discussed the progress on the Gomal Zam and the Darawat dams. The issue of new canals also came under discussion. The water resources secretary told the meeting that water would be taken from the Jhelum river and diverted to Cholistan from Salmaniki Head Works.

On the water crisis in Karachi, the meeting informed that the work on the provincial part of the K-4 project to provide water to the citizens of Karachi would be completed in April 2027. The committee called for ensuring timely completion of the projects.
