Dolly Parton has released a heartfelt new song, If You Hadn’t Been There, in honor of her late husband, Carl Dean, who passed away on March 3 at the age of 82.
The tribute, shared just days after his death, reflects on their lifelong love and the unwavering support he provided throughout their 58-year marriage.Announcing the song on Instagram on March 7, Parton, 78, posted a throwback photo of herself with Dean, writing, “Carl and I fell in love when I was 18 and he was 23, and like all great love stories, they never end. They live in memory and in song, and I dedicate this to him.”
The ballad opens with Parton addressing her husband directly, expressing gratitude for his love, trust, and belief in her. “If you hadn’t been there / Where would I be? / Without your trust / Love and belief,” she sings. The lyrics recount how Dean stood by her side during life’s challenges, providing encouragement and support.
In one of the song’s most poignant moments, Parton thanks Dean for his unconditional love, singing, “I thank God and you / Oh for your loving care / And for giving me love / With more to spare.”
Parton had previously acknowledged the outpouring of support from fans following Dean’s passing. In a message posted on March 6, she expressed appreciation for the messages, cards, and flowers sent in his memory. “He is in God’s arms now, and I am okay with that,” she wrote.
Parton and Dean’s love story began in 1964, shortly after she moved to Nashville to pursue her music career. Despite avoiding the spotlight, Dean remained a steadfast presence in her life, offering unwavering support.
