The first trailer for Godzilla Minus Zero has been unveiled at CinemaCon, offering an early look at the sequel to the 2023 film Godzilla Minus One and confirming new plot details and an IMAX release.

The footage, shown during the annual industry event in Las Vegas, included a behind-the-scenes presentation highlighting production elements such as large-scale sets, bomber jets, destroyed cities and a miniature Godzilla model. The sequel is directed by Takashi Yamazaki, who also helmed the previous film.

Yamazaki confirmed that the story takes place two years after the events of Godzilla Minus One, continuing the narrative of survivors following the kaiju’s last attack.

The trailer concludes with Godzilla approaching the Statue of Liberty, indicating a shift in setting towards New York City.

Godzilla Minus One marked the 37th film in the franchise and the 33rd produced by Toho. The film achieved international success, earning $116 million worldwide and becoming the highest-grossing Japanese Godzilla film.

It also won the Academy Award for best visual effects, becoming the first non-English language film to do so in that category.

The original cast included Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Munetaka Aoki and Hidetaka Yoshioka. The sequel is expected to build on the scale of its predecessor, with a larger production budget.

Godzilla Minus Zero will also mark the first time a Japanese film in the franchise has been produced for IMAX, expanding its theatrical presentation.

The film is scheduled to release in Japan on November 3 and in the United States on November 6. Meanwhile, another instalment in the Monsterverse franchise, Godzilla X Kong: Supernova, is also in development.
