CBS has officially canceled S.W.A.T., the police drama starring Shemar Moore, bringing its run to an end with its eighth season in May.

The decision marks the second time the network has axed the series, following a similar cancellation in May 2023 after six seasons. At that time, CBS reversed its decision days later, renewing it for a seventh and final season, before ultimately extending it to an eighth season in 2024.

According to Deadline, CBS opted not to engage in renewal discussions this time, leading to the show's conclusion. Over the past two years, lead studio Sony Pictures Television had managed to secure last-minute renewals by negotiating financial terms favorable to the network. However, S.W.A.T. was among the lower-rated dramas on CBS, making it a likely candidate for cancellation despite its consistent Friday-night performance.

The cancellation is part of a broader shake-up at CBS, which also recently ended FBI: Most Wanted and FBI: International. All three axed dramas were produced by outside studios, Sony Pictures Television and Universal Television. CBS is making room for new series, including Sheriff Country, a spinoff from Fire Country, and Boston Blue, which extends the Blue Bloods universe. Talks are also ongoing for a potential sixth and final season of The Equalizer, while the newly launched Watson appears likely to be renewed.

Executive producer Andrew Dettmann expressed disappointment over the cancellation, emphasizing the dedication of the cast and crew. Former showrunner Shawn Ryan also acknowledged the impact on the show's crew, highlighting concerns about their future employment.

S.W.A.T., based on the 1975 series and 2003 film, featured Moore as LAPD Sergeant Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson. The series was produced by Ryan, Dettmann, Justin Lin, Neal H. Moritz, and others.
