Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, tragically passed away this week, with their family suspecting carbon monoxide poisoning as the cause, TMZ has learned.

Elizabeth Jean Hackman, the couple's daughter, shared that while the cause of death has not been confirmed, toxic fumes might be to blame.

Law enforcement found no signs of foul play, and Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza confirmed that deputies have not ruled out any possibilities, as the investigation remains ongoing.

The couple was found dead at their modern New Mexico home on Wednesday, along with one of their dogs, after a neighbor raised concerns. The house, built in 2000, has not been linked to any known gas leaks or service issues.

Sheriff Mendoza explained that during a welfare check, gas company and fire department personnel were dispatched to ensure the safety of officers during their search.

Gene and Betsy had been living in the New Mexico home since his retirement in 2004, where Gene, now 95, enjoyed painting. Elizabeth revealed that Gene's favorite film was 'The French Connection.'
