LAHORE:

The Punjab Police has announced the establishment of a Crime Control Department (CCD) to replace the Organized Crime Unit (OCU) in an effort to strengthen law enforcement against serious criminal activities across the province.

The newly formed CCD will be led by an Additional Inspector General (IG) and will consist of 4,250 officers and personnel.

Its core responsibilities will include investigating and prosecuting 17 major crimes, ensuring a more systematic and effective approach to crime control.

The department's hierarchy includes three Deputy Inspector Generals (DIGs), 10 Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs), 13 Superintendents of Police (SPs), and 47 Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs), along with dedicated teams of Assistant Sub-Inspectors (ASIs), head constables, and constables.

The decision to disband the OCU follows frequent complaints of corruption and abuse of authority, particularly in drug-related crimes involving drones along Lahore's border areas.

Established two years ago after the restructuring of the Anti-Organized Crime Unit (commonly known as CIA), the OCU faced mounting allegations of power misuse and links to criminal activities, prompting the need for a major overhaul.

Unlike the OCU, which was managed at the district and city level, the new CCD will operate at the provincial level and report directly to senior provincial authorities.

The CCD will be deployed across Punjab, with 900 officers in Lahore, 1,000 personnel stationed across Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Multan, and Gujranwala, 1,500 officers assigned to 'A' category districts, and 850 officers placed in 'B' category districts.

Until new positions are formally sanctioned, the CCD will function using existing Punjab Police personnel.

The Inspector General's Office will provide necessary resources, including computers, weapons, and other essential equipment, while plans for new office buildings and infrastructure are underway.
