Honeymoon couple dies of asphyxia in Kashmir; laid to rest in city

Had left heater on despite warning by guest house staff to turn it off before sleeping

A newly-wed couple from Karachi who died of asphyxia on their honeymoon in Azad Jammu and Kashmir were laid to rest in Wadi-e-Hussain Cemetery on Sunday.

Moving scenes were witnessed as the bride and groom who had left Karachi full of joy and laughter came back in caskets. A large number of relatives, friends and local residents attended the funeral prayers at the Imambargah Jafar Tayyar.

According to the details, 26-year-old Syed Muhammad Taha Ali, a resident of Malir Jafar Tayyar got married on February 4, and on February 11, the newlyweds left for Kashmir by train for honeymoon.

Abbas Ali, brother of Taha Ali, told The Express Tribune that the newly-wed couple stayed at a guest house called Shangrila in a village about 145 km from Muzaffarabad on Saturday night.

Wife, Dua Zahra called her elder sister at around 11 pm and told her that in the morning they would leave for Neelam Valley. However, the newlywed couple slept at night and never woke up. The hotel management informed their families of their death. According to the management, due to severe cold, the couple had kept a cylinder in the room to lit heater.

The management had asked the couple to approach the reception to switch off the gas cylinder before sleeping. Upon which, the couple said they would remove the cylinder themselves.

The bodies of the newlyweds were shifted from Kashmir to Islamabad after police action. Edhi Foundation arranged for the bodies to be shifted to Karachi.

Taha was a mechanical engineer employed at Port Qasim and was the youngest among the two brothers. Dua Zehra was a BBA student and the youngest among three sisters.
