Telehealth company Hims & Hers is under fire for a Super Bowl commercial promoting its compounded versions of weight loss drugs similar to Wegovy and Ozempic.
The ad, which criticizes the U.S. healthcare system, fails to disclose that the drugs are unapproved by the Food and Drug Administration, raising concerns among health experts.
Critics argue the ad misleads consumers by omitting crucial safety information typically required in pharmaceutical advertising. Elizabeth Glowacki, a health communication expert at Northeastern University, warns that the campaign creates a false impression that consumers can self-prescribe medication without consulting a doctor.
"They make it seem as though you can take all of this into your own hands without supervision, which can have harmful consequences," Glowacki said.
The commercial features emotional messaging and visually appealing products, a marketing strategy known as "fear appeal" advertising. Glowacki notes that the ad’s presentation, including green-labeled packaging, may trick consumers into perceiving the drugs as safer than they are.
Hims & Hers defended its approach, accusing critics of protecting a flawed healthcare system. However, Glowacki remains concerned that the company’s marketing makes it easier for consumers to access these products without professional oversight.
She advises those considering weight loss drugs to consult a healthcare provider before making a decision. “Still talk to your doctor, and always scrutinize ingredients before use,” she said.
