Angelina Jolie discussed Hollywood challenges and balancing artistry at the 36th Palm Springs Film Festival on Jan 3.

Speaking with Variety’s Clayton Davis, the Oscar-winning actress described Hollywood as “sometimes not a healthy business” and emphasized the importance of living a full life beyond one’s career.

“When young artists ask me for advice, I stress the need to live a full life,” said Jolie, 49. “You don’t have to get that job. Find ways to live as an artist, be around artists, but also focus on living a full life.”

Jolie, honored with the festival’s Desert Palm Achievement Award, also discussed her transformation into opera icon Maria Callas for Pablo Larraín’s biopic Maria. The actress revealed she had never sung before taking on the role and initially lied about her singing ability when approached for the part. “Obviously, nobody can sing like Maria. No one. But I’ll do my best,” Jolie shared.

Her performance has received critical acclaim, earning her nominations at the 2025 Golden Globe Awards and upcoming Critics Choice Awards.

Reflecting on personal challenges, Jolie previously told The Hollywood Reporter about her limited close relationships, citing betrayals and the early loss of her mother, Marcheline Bertrand. “I don’t have a lot of those warm, close relationships, but a few is enough,” she said.

Jolie’s candid insights continue to inspire as she navigates a career marked by artistic exploration and personal resilience.
