Ariana Grande recently expressed her heartfelt gratitude to Ryan Reynolds for his glowing remarks about Wicked during the 2024 National Board of Review gala. Directed by Jon M. Chu, the musical fantasy film features Grande as Glinda and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, alongside a star-studded cast that includes Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Michelle Yeoh, and Jeff Goldblum. The film received the award for Best Film of 2024, cementing its cultural and cinematic impact.
On January 7, Reynolds presented the award to Wicked's producer Marc Platt, delivering a speech that resonated deeply with the audience. He praised the film for daring to center on strong, complex female characters and highlighted its enduring emotional resonance. “Wicked is indeed wicked. It dares to center on two powerful women. It examines a nuanced, complex relationship which has resonated with people for over two decades on stage,” Reynolds remarked.
Grande, visibly moved during Reynolds’ speech, later took to Instagram stories to share her gratitude. Reposting a story shared by Reynolds featuring her photo, she wrote, “YOU REALLY MOVED ME @vancityreynolds CLEARLY LOL.” She added, “Thank you for the kindest and most generous words last night. I’m so serious they meant so much, and I appreciate you!!!!!!”
Reynolds also addressed societal expectations reflected in films focused on women, stating, “They’re often held to the standards women are held to in life: You must be perfect.” Additionally, he commended Universal Pictures for its unwavering support and belief in the film, which played a vital role in its success.
