A decorated U.S. Army Green Beret who caused an explosion outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas reportedly used generative AI, including ChatGPT, to aid in planning the attack, according to Las Vegas police.

The incident occurred on January 1 and resulted in minor injuries to seven people but caused minimal damage to the hotel.

Matthew Livelsberger, 37, detonated a Tesla Cybertruck outside the hotel before fatally shooting himself. Investigators revealed that Livelsberger conducted AI-driven searches to gather information on explosive targets, ammunition speeds, and the legality of fireworks in Arizona. Notes left on his mobile phone described the act as a "wake-up call" to address societal and political issues, including the war in Ukraine and the nation's perceived decline.

Livelsberger, a Colorado Springs resident with two deployments to Afghanistan, expressed no hostility toward President-elect Donald Trump or Tesla CEO Elon Musk. In his notes, he called for Americans to "rally around" both figures.

Authorities confirmed that Livelsberger acted alone and had no affiliations suggesting broader threats. His writings included personal reflections on his military service, stating he needed to “cleanse” his mind of the burdens he carried from combat.

The use of generative AI in planning the explosion has raised concerns about the technology's potential misuse. Law enforcement continues to analyze the broader implications of AI tools in facilitating acts of violence.
