Nicole Kidman revealed she nearly gave up her acting career in 2008 after the birth of her first daughter, Sunday Kidman-Urban, with husband Keith Urban.
Speaking to CBS News, the Academy Award-winning actress shared that she felt ready to leave Hollywood behind and focus entirely on family life in Nashville.
“When I gave birth to [Sunday], I thought, ‘I’m pretty much done now,’” Kidman recalled. “We were living on a farm, and I was ready to step away.” However, her mother encouraged her to reconsider, advising her to “keep a finger sort of in it” and not give up entirely. Kidman eventually heeded the advice and returned to the screen, earning her third Oscar nomination for Rabbit Hole three years later.
Reflecting on her mother’s guidance, Kidman acknowledged the generational differences in opportunities for women. “That came from a woman who didn’t have the opportunities I had,” she said, adding that her mother’s advice helped her navigate balancing career and family.
Since her return, Kidman has taken on diverse roles in films such as Just Go With It, Hemingway & Gellhorn, and The Railway Man. She will next star in A24’s Babygirl, an erotic thriller premiering on Christmas Day. In the film, she plays Romy, a high-powered CEO entangled in a risky relationship with a younger intern, played by Harris Dickinson. Kidman’s journey highlights the resilience and dedication that have defined her illustrious career.
