Ariana Grande recently opened up about her efforts to ensure fairness and foster camaraderie with her Wicked co-star, Cynthia Erivo. While addressing an audience at a SAG-AFTRA Foundation Conversation, Grande explained that she carefully reviewed her Wicked contract with Erivo before filming commenced to align their needs.

“When I received my contract, I called Cynthia and suggested we go through it together, point by point,” said the Grammy-winning star. She emphasized that any requirements from either party were treated as mutual needs, highlighting their commitment to stand in solidarity. “I wanted us to have each other’s backs. If she needed something, it became something we both needed,” Grande said.

The relationship between the two actresses extended beyond logistical planning. Grande noted the "granular" level of connection they developed prior to filming, explaining that no press material or social media snippet could adequately capture the depth of their friendship.

“We started fostering this bond long before stepping on set,” Grande added. “One of the achievements I’m proudest of is how we nurtured each other throughout this process.”

Their teamwork and mutual respect have been reflected in the film’s staggering success. Released on November 22, Wicked, a cinematic adaptation of the beloved Broadway prequel to The Wizard of Oz, has amassed an impressive global box office gross of $472 million, securing its place as the ninth highest-earning film of 2024.

The movie follows Erivo’s portrayal of Elphaba (The Wicked Witch of the West) and Grande’s Glinda (The Good), two close friends-turned-iconic rivals in the world of Oz before Dorothy and Toto arrive.
