Jim Carrey is back as Dr. Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and has shared the humorous reason behind his decision to rejoin the franchise. At the film’s U.K. premiere on Dec. 10, the veteran actor said with a smile, “I came back to this universe because, first of all, I get to play a genius, which is a bit of a stretch. And, you know, it’s just… I bought a lot of stuff and I need the money, frankly. Yeah.”
Carrey, who also voices Gerald Robotnik, Dr. Robotnik’s grandfather in the upcoming film, has scaled back his Hollywood appearances over the past decade. Despite earlier plans to retire, the Ace Ventura star said the right projects, like Sonic the Hedgehog, continue to draw him in.
The actor, who has pursued passions like painting and political cartooning in recent years, previously expressed his disillusionment with the industry. In a 2018 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Carrey revealed, “I didn’t like what was happening, the corporations taking over and all that. I felt pulled toward a different type of creative outlet.”
Directed by Jeff Fowler, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 also features a star-studded cast, including Keanu Reeves, Idris Elba, and James Marsden. The movie speeds into theaters on Dec. 20, just in time for the holiday season.
Carrey’s return as the eccentric villain promises another entertaining performance in a franchise beloved by fans worldwide.
