Anna Wintour has addressed the long-standing comparisons between herself and Meryl Streep’s iconic character, Miranda Priestly, from The Devil Wears Prada. During a recent gala performance for the West End musical adaptation of the 2006 film, Wintour was asked about the similarities between her and the character based on the bestselling novel by Lauren Weisberger.
The Vogue editor-in-chief, who has long been the subject of such comparisons, responded to the question with a sense of humor, saying, “It’s for the audience and for the people I work with to decide if there are any similarities between me and Miranda Priestly.”
The Devil Wears Prada movie, directed by David Frankel, tells the story of Andy Sachs (played by Anne Hathaway), a young journalist who lands a job as the assistant to the notoriously demanding Miranda Priestly. The role earned Meryl Streep a Golden Globe and an Academy Award nomination for her portrayal of the powerful editor-in-chief of a high-fashion magazine.
The West End musical, currently running at the Dominion Theatre, stars Vanessa Williams as the stage version of Miranda Priestly. The musical, which premiered in Chicago in 2022, features a score by Elton John and lyrics by Shaina Taub and Mark Sonnenblick.
Meanwhile, Disney has confirmed that a Devil Wears Prada sequel is in the works, with original screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna returning to pen the script. Wintour’s remarks add fuel to the ongoing conversation about her relationship with the cultural phenomenon that The Devil Wears Prada has become over the years.
