Security lacunas detected in theft case

Reports suggest theft may have involved collusion among workers

HARIPUR:

The Ghaziabad police have registered a case and launched a detailed investigation into the theft of copper wires worth Rs600 million from the Dul Store of the Tarbela Power House. The circle DSP, along with police personnel, visited the crime scene.

According to the police, important revelations are expected regarding the theft of wires and other equipment, while local residents have suspected that a complete plan was chalked out for the big theft.

Police investigations show that the stolen wire was transferred by boat from the Dul Store, located near the main dam. Workers were paid hefty amounts to facilitate the gradual theft of goods through collusion in the restricted security zone.

The theft in the secured area of the project has raised questions about poor security as no security guard or watch staff was assigned to protect the store and there were no CCTV cameras installed there.

Police were unable to register a case despite passing three days after the incident. Ghazi Circle DSP Raja Muhammad Bashir expressed dissatisfaction over inadequate security measures at the Dul Store and inspected the store's entry and exit points.

Stolen wires and other items were imported a few years ago and at that time, their value was estimated at Rs600m.

Sources claim the police interrogation with the scrap contractor may lead to the truth. It is alleged that some officers and officials have obtained leave and returned to their areas after the incident.
