Once a vibrant part of school life, physical training (PT) shows in government high and middle schools across South Punjab have disappeared, despite the presence of Physical Education Teachers (PETs).
PT activities, once a hallmark of school events promoting fitness, discipline, and teamwork, are now sidelined, with schools prioritising academics over physical education.
In the past, PT shows were regularly held during annual events, captivating students, parents, and the community.
"PT shows brought excitement and taught students discipline and teamwork," recalled Muhammad Hanif, a long-serving teacher. These activities fostered physical fitness, mental sharpness, and social development.
The gradual decline of PT shows is attributed to schools focusing solely on academic results, sidelining PETs to teach other subjects. "Schools now forget that PT shows helped develop both body and mind," noted another teacher, Sajjad.
Parents and community members lament the loss of these events, which once united families and instilled valuable life lessons in students.
"We miss those days," said Amjid Suelman, a local resident, adding that the shows built character in children.
However, official sources mentioned that discussions on reinstating formal physical education are underway, with School Olympics being organised as an alternative.
Authorities acknowledged the importance of PT shows and expressed interest in reintroducing this tradition.
