In the newly released documentary Child Star, Demi Lovato opens up about her strained relationship with Camp Rock co-star Alyson Stoner during the filming of Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam.

Speaking with Stoner, Lovato, who uses she/they pronouns, candidly reflected on how fame impacted her behaviour on set, acknowledging her own role in creating tension between them.

"I look back at that time, and I have profound sadness," Lovato shared, adding, "'cause I'm like, 'How many people did I treat poorly?'"

The two actors reminisced about their experiences on the first Camp Rock movie in 2008, with Lovato recalling how they felt like an equal among their co-stars.

However, by the time the sequel came around in 2010, Lovato’s career had skyrocketed. "Then my career exploded, and all of a sudden I was staying at the Four Seasons," they explained. "I was trading connection for success."

Stoner, who uses they/them pronouns, recalled how difficult it was to connect with Lovato during the filming of The Final Jam. "It felt so hard to access you in that way," Stoner admitted. "It didn't seem like you wanted to be reached."

Lovato expressed regret over her actions, offering an emotional apology. "I just want to genuinely, deeply apologise for any stress or any walking on eggshells, any hurt feelings."

Both actors noted how dissociation was a common experience among child stars, with Lovato stating that she struggles to recall certain moments from the filming period.

Child Star, co-directed by Lovato, is currently streaming on Hulu.
