Miley Cyrus is facing a copyright lawsuit over her Grammy-winning song Flowers, accused of copying Bruno Mars' 2012 hit When I Was Your Man. Filed by Tempo Music Investments, the lawsuit claims the melodies, harmonies, and chord progressions between the two songs are too similar to be coincidental. Sources told DailyMail.com that Miley’s real concern isn't the lawsuit itself but the possibility of having to confirm that the song was inspired by her ex-husband, Liam Hemsworth.
"Miley is not too concerned with the lawsuit itself, but everyone who knows Miley knows that this track was written as a way of healing from Liam," an insider revealed. The couple, who married in 2018 and divorced in 2020, had a tumultuous relationship, with Hemsworth reportedly dedicating Mars' song to Cyrus during their engagement.
The insider also said, “She is worried that she will have to reveal her inspiration for writing the song... revealing it was specifically about Liam publicly and on record is very unsettling.” Cyrus has yet to publicly comment on the lawsuit, but the insider said she is waiting to see how it unfolds.
Tempo Music is seeking damages and requests that Flowers be removed from distribution. It also seeks to bar Cyrus from performing the song. Mars is not personally involved in the lawsuit. Tempo Music reportedly gained control of part of his song catalog after a sale in 2021.
