2024 Emmy Awards: A night of surprises as ‘The Bear’ and ‘Baby Reindeer’ take home top honors

The Bear dominated the 2024 Emmys, while Richard Gadd’s Baby Reindeer and FX’s Shogun also made a strong impact.

The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards saw major wins for FX's The Bear and Richard Gadd’s Baby Reindeer, along with surprises across categories.

The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, was a night filled with notable victories and unexpected moments. Leading the charge was FX’s The Bear, which took home several of the most prestigious awards in the comedy category. After dominating the January Emmys for its first season, The Bear continued its winning streak in 2024 with 23 nominations, including big wins for Best Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Directing.

Jeremy Allen White, who stars as Carmen "Carmy" Berzatto, took home the Best Lead Actor award, marking his second consecutive win in the category. His co-stars Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Liza Colon-Zayas won Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress, respectively, highlighting the show's stellar ensemble cast. Christopher Storer won the Emmy for Best Directing for his work on the show.

On the limited series front, Richard Gadd earned his first-ever Emmy for writing Baby Reindeer, a compelling and intense story that has captivated audiences and critics alike. Gadd’s win adds to the series’ growing reputation as one of the year’s standout productions.

FX’s Shogun also made waves, garnering 25 nominations and keeping FX in the spotlight throughout the evening. While Netflix led the overall nominations with 107 across 35 programs, it was FX's The Bear and Shogun that stole much of the spotlight.

HBO, a traditional Emmy heavyweight, had a quieter night, finishing with 91 nominations. The network’s most-nominated series, True Detective: Night Country, earned 19 nods but faced stiff competition from all corners, especially from Apple TV, which had 72 nominations.

Some of the other major wins included Jean Smart winning Best Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for Hacks, and Traitors taking home the Emmy for Outstanding Reality or Competition Program. The night also saw The Daily Show win Outstanding Talk Show and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver named Best Scripted Variety Series.
