The actress revealed in an interview that her role in 'The Outrun' made her more aware of her own alcohol consumption.
Saoirse Ronan opened up about how her latest film, The Outrun, changed her relationship with alcohol. In an interview with The Times, Ronan shared that playing the role of Rona, a character struggling with alcoholism in the adaptation of Amy Liptrot's memoir, has made her more mindful of her drinking habits.
"I’m more conscious of my intake — and there’s more people of my generation who are choosing not to drink any more because of how it makes them feel," the actress said. Ronan, 30, explained that alcoholism is something she has personal experience with, adding, "I’ve been on the receiving end of the pain caused by it."
She reflected on how witnessing people close to her struggle with addiction has been particularly difficult. "There’s a helplessness you feel when you watch someone you love...go through that," she noted, describing the emotional toll of watching friends and loved ones change because of their addiction.
The Outrun, directed by Nora Fingscheidt, also stars Stephen Dillane, Saskia Reeves, and Paapa Essiedu. The film follows Ronan’s character Rona, who returns to the Orkney Islands to confront her troubled past after living a chaotic life in London. The film is set to be released in theaters on October 4, 2024.
