Jenna Ortega recently shared a touching memory of her late friend, Cameron Boyce, during an interview with Canal+ while promoting Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Reflecting on their time as Disney stars, Ortega, 21, recalled the last time she saw Boyce during an audition where they were supposed to play love interests. The pair, who had known each other since Ortega was 11, felt uncomfortable with the scene, and Boyce stepped in to voice their mutual feelings.
"We both just kinda looked at each other and we were like, 'No, we can't do this,'" Ortega shared. "It was so sweet because I was uncomfortable, and he made me feel better." She added that she was "really thankful and grateful" for Boyce’s actions, and her co-star Catherine O’Hara called him a "gentleman" for his thoughtful behavior.
Boyce, who passed away at the age of 20 in July 2019 after suffering a seizure in his sleep, continues to be remembered fondly by his family, friends, and fans. His parents, Libby and Victor Boyce, told PEOPLE in June that it "means everything" to them that his legacy continues through events like their annual Cam For A Cause fundraiser. "People still want to hold onto him," said Victor Boyce, while Libby called their late son a "beautiful soul."
Ortega's reflection adds to the many heartfelt tributes Disney stars have shared for Boyce, including Sofia Carson, Skai Jackson, and China Anne McClain, who all continue to honor his memory.
