A new Borderlands game has launched without prior announcement, with Borderlands Mobile now available as a free-to-play title on iOS devices.

Developed by Zynga’s NaturalMotion studio with creative input from Gearbox, the release marks an unexpected addition to the franchise.

The game is a mission-based looter shooter designed for mobile platforms, primarily optimised for iPhone. Early players have reported limited functionality on larger devices such as iPads, where display adjustments are required to fill the screen.

At launch, gameplay options also appear restricted, with only the Siren character available and no customisation features currently accessible.

The release was first noticed by online users, with no official promotion, trailer, or announcement shared across Borderlands’ official channels at the time it became available. This lack of marketing has led to speculation among players regarding the nature of the launch and its intended scope.

Initial gameplay suggests the title may be set after the events of Borderlands 3, although its place within the broader timeline remains unclear. The absence of detailed narrative information or additional playable content indicates the game may still be in an early stage.

Following the unexpected release, 2K provided further clarification in a statement. The publisher confirmed that Borderlands Mobile is not the final title and described it as part of a limited-time test.

“We are always exploring ways to introduce Borderlands to new audiences. Zynga’s NaturalMotion studio is currently conducting a limited-time test for an untitled Borderlands mobile project, with Gearbox providing creative guidance on the franchise’s design, history, and lore. We hope that players enjoy this new Borderlands experience and look forward to their feedback.”
