Nicolas Cage has claimed that Christopher Nolan stopped contacting him professionally after the actor turned down a role in the 2002 psychological thriller Insomnia.

During a recent interview with The New York Times, Cage reflected on past career decisions and the fallout that occasionally followed when he rejected film offers from major directors. According to the actor, some filmmakers took those decisions personally and never approached him again for future projects.

Cage specifically mentioned Nolan while discussing directors who allegedly “get their feelings hurt” after an actor declines a role. The Oscar winner said Nolan “will not call me back” following Cage’s decision to pass on Insomnia, the crime thriller eventually starring Al Pacino, Robin Williams and Hilary Swank.

The actor explained that turning down projects has occasionally damaged professional relationships throughout his decades long Hollywood career. Cage also named Woody Allen and Paul Thomas Anderson among filmmakers he claimed never returned with another offer after earlier rejections.

However, Cage singled out director David O Russell as the exception. He praised the filmmaker for reconnecting with him years after Cage had initially rejected one of his earlier projects. The actor said Russell later approached him again for Madden, the upcoming sports drama based on the life of legendary NFL coach and broadcaster John Madden.

Cage described Russell’s decision to return with another offer as showing “a lot of class”, adding that he enjoyed working on the production alongside Christian Bale and comedian John Mulaney.

The comments quickly sparked debate online, with film fans revisiting Cage’s long and unpredictable Hollywood career. Social media users pointed out that Cage has famously alternated between acclaimed prestige dramas and eccentric genre projects over the years, making his rejected opportunities particularly fascinating for cinema audiences.

Nolan’s Insomnia remains one of the director’s earliest studio films and helped establish his reputation in Hollywood before later successes including Batman Begins, Inception, Dunkirk and Oppenheimer. Released in 2002, the film followed a detective investigating a murder in a remote Alaskan town while battling severe insomnia.

Cage did not reveal which role he had been offered in the project, nor did he provide additional details regarding his conversations with Nolan at the time. Representatives for Nolan have not publicly commented on the actor’s remarks.

The interview arrived as Cage continues promoting several major projects, including his appearance in Spider Noir and Russell’s Madden. The actor portrays John Madden in the sports biopic, while Bale stars as former Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis.
