Rumer Willis is opening up about her decision to undergo genetic testing as she takes a proactive approach to her health following her father Bruce Willis’ frontotemporal dementia diagnosis.

The 38-year-old actress, who is the eldest daughter of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore, spoke to PEOPLE about her partnership with Function, a health membership platform offering advanced laboratory testing and health assessments. Through the service, Willis has used an APOE genetic test to learn more about her potential risk for Alzheimer’s disease.

“It’s terrifying to get answers sometimes,” Willis said, noting that dementia and other health conditions have affected members of her family.

However, she described access to health information as empowering. Willis said understanding potential risks can help people discuss concerns with their healthcare providers and make informed decisions about their health.

The actress explained that she has been interested in monitoring areas including brain health, heart health, gut health and reproductive health even before her father’s diagnosis. She said small lifestyle changes have become increasingly important to her as she focuses on maintaining her wellbeing and being present for her daughter.

Willis also discussed changes she has made to her daily routine, including taking supplements, cooking more meals at home and reducing her use of perfumes.

“I don’t think it’s really an option anymore to not be proactive about it,” she said.

Bruce Willis’ family announced his frontotemporal dementia diagnosis in 2023 after previously revealing that he had been diagnosed with aphasia. Since then, his family members have continued to share updates about his condition while highlighting the importance of spending meaningful time together.
