During the Democratic National Convention, UAW President Shawn Fain surprised the audience with a humorous jab at Donald Trump, referencing St. Louis rapper Nelly’s hit single "Hot In Herre."
Fain, a long-time supporter of Kamala Harris and a vocal critic of Trump, took the stage, removed his jacket, and quoted Nelly, calling the rapper an "American poet."
He remarked, “In the words of the great American poet Nelly, it’s getting hot in here,” as an excuse to reveal a t-shirt that read, "Trump is a scab."
The playful diss, combined with the Nelly reference, drew raucous applause from the crowd.
Nelly, who has previously criticized Trump’s transition from celebrity to politician, has been vocal about his disapproval of the former president. In 2017, the rapper expressed disappointment with Trump’s political career, lamenting that he could no longer stay at Trump hotels, where he had been a long-time guest.
Recently, Nelly faced legal issues after being arrested for an outstanding traffic warrant.
Despite reports that he might be charged with possession due to ecstasy pills found on him, the rapper was released and made a strong comeback by performing at an MGK concert.
MGK praised Nelly for his cultural impact during the show, marking a triumphant return for the rapper after his brief legal troubles.
