Administration, civic bodies take stock of post-Eid cleanliness drive

Over 100,000 tons of animal waste and garbage was lifted in the three days of the Eidul Azha, the Solid Waste Management Board (SWMB) said in its report to the commissioner Karachi adding that the cleanliness operation would continue for few more days.

On the third day of Eid, the deputy commissioners of the seven districts of the Karachi division presented a three-day performance report on post-Eid operation clean-up to Commissioner Karachi Syed Hassan Naqvi.

Solid Waste Management Board (SWMB) also presented its report to the commissioner stating that Karachi Administration, SWMB, Town Administration, Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, and Cantonment Boards coordinated efforts to remove offal during Eidul Azha. This work will continue on the fourth day of Eid.

The report highlighted that over 100,000 tons of offal and garbage were collected and disposed of in three days. Commissioner Naqvi is personally overseeing the cleaning and removal operations, staying in constant contact with all Deputy Commissioners and relevant officers. He is also monitoring the performance of control rooms set up in Deputy Commissioners' offices.

On the second day of Eid, Commissioner Naqvi held a review meeting to assess the arrangements and directed effective action under Section 144 against waste pickers. This directive is being implemented, with various arrests made. The Commissioner has instructed all Deputy Commissioners to prepare and submit reports on the enforcement of Section 144.

Additional Commissioner, Syed Ghulam Mehdi, DC Central Fawad Ghaffar Soomro, and Assistant Commissioner Headquarters Rabia Syed, participated in person, while other deputy commissioners joined via video link. They presented their three-day performance reports, confirming the full implementation of garbage removal instructions.

All assistant commissioners and relevant officers are actively supervising the entrails lifting and cleaning operations. As of the afternoon of the third day of Eid, over 100,000 tons of offal and garbage were picked up and disposed of at Jam Chakru, Gond Pass, and GTS Shrafi landfill sites.
