Netflix's ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ announces open casting call for character

Showrunners are casting for Toph Beifong in season 2 of the series, seeking blind or low-vision actors.

Netflix's live-action adaptation of ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ has officially announced an open casting call for one of the series' most anticipated characters, Toph Beifong. 

This call comes as the show gears up for its second season following the success of its first season, which led to its renewal for the final two seasons adapting Books 2 and 3 of the original Nickelodeon animated series.

Casting director Jenny Jue shared the news on X, formerly Twitter, revealing that the search for an actor to portray Toph has begun. The casting call specifies that Toph should be "mid-late teens, blind, female, Asian," highlighting her "sassy" confidence and determination. Notably, the call encourages individuals who are blind or have low vision to audition, showcasing the show's dedication to authentic representation.

According to Screen Rant, Toph Beifong, introduced in Book 2 of the animated series, quickly became a powerful and beloved member of Team Avatar. Her introduction in the live-action series remains faithful to the original timeline, adding to the anticipation and pressure to cast her accurately. Fans are particularly interested in how the show will capture Toph's signature sarcasm and fierce personality.

While the casting call indicates a slight age adjustment, describing Toph as being in her mid-late teens instead of 12, this change aligns with the ageing live-action cast, ensuring she fits within the same age group as her peers.
