The highly anticipated sequel "Moana 2" has already made a splash even before its theatrical release. The trailer for the film has garnered a record-breaking 178 million views in its first 24 hours, surpassing previous records held by Pixar's "Inside Out 2" (157 million) and Disney Animation's "Frozen 2" (116 million). This marks a significant milestone for Disney's animation empire, which includes both Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar.
The "Moana 2" trailer will be featured before "Inside Out 2," which is projected to have a strong opening weekend in theatres, further boosting the anticipation for the sequel. Both films are expected to revitalise Disney's animation division, particularly Pixar, which has faced recent challenges.
"Moana 2" reunites voice stars Auli'i Cravalho as Moana and Dwayne Johnson as demigod Maui. The animated feature, directed by David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand, and Dana Ledoux Miller, follows Moana on an unexpected journey to long-lost waters after receiving a call from her ancestors. The film features new songs by Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear.
Originally developed as a television series, "Moana 2" was later reimagined as a theatrical sequel. It is produced by Christina Chen and Yvett Merino.
The success of the trailer also speaks to the enduring popularity of the original "Moana," which was the most streamed movie across all platforms in 2023. Disney is further capitalising on the franchise's popularity with a live-action remake directed by Thomas Kail, slated for release in 2026.
