Billie Eilish recently performed ‘Lunch’ on ‘The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.’
Eilish, alongside her brother Finneas and band, showcased the second track from her latest album, ‘Hit Me Hard and Soft.’
Speaking to Colbert, Eilish opened up about her journey with music and identity.
Reflecting on her public image, Eilish admitted to once being a rebel. “I kind of needed to play this whole thing of ‘I’m not what you think I am,'” she shared.
“I thought at the time that it was very me and I realize in hindsight I was just trying to be seen and express myself and show that people can be multifaceted and I am one of those people.”
She continued, “I think that with Hit Me Hard and Soft, it’s the first time since I’ve been an adult and maybe ever in my creative life — it truly is the most genuine thing I’ve ever made. It feels very, very me.”
About the song, ‘Lunch,’ she told Rolling Stone earlier in a cover interview that it was a turning point in her journey of self-discovery.
“[It] actually part of what helped me become who I am, to be real.” she explained, adding “Nobody should be pressured into being one thing or the other.”
Eilish also told Rolling Stone about a near-miss for the album title, “Patheticville,” inspired by her favorite show, The Office. “[We] laughed and wrote it down,” she revealed.
