PESHAWAR:

The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government has embarked on a significant initiative to formalize and elevate the gemstone sector, aiming to establish it as a prominent export industry. To achieve this, the gemstone cluster at Namak Mandi will be transformed into a state-of-the-art Gems Processing & Export Centre.

A high-level meeting chaired by Special Assistant to the Chief Minister for Commerce and Technical Education, Abdul Karim Tordher, outlined decisions to bolster the gemstone sector’s development.

Key among these decisions is the establishment of a modern Gems Processing and Export Centre in Peshawar, equipped with cutting-edge facilities adhering to international standards. The revamped center will accommodate essential amenities such as a Certification Lab, International Mail Office (IMO), Bank, Customs Office, and streamlined procedures for obtaining necessary clearances, including NOCs for foreign investors. Moreover, a Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iran Desk will be established within the center to foster regional collaboration.

This transformative initiative is slated for completion within the next four months, marking a significant milestone in the economic landscape of both the province and the nation. Additionally, the annual Gems Show, supported by the Federal Export Development Fund, will further showcase the potential of the gemstone sector and attract investment. The assurance of fund-supported facilities underscores the commitment to providing a conducive environment for industry growth.

Special Assistant Abdul Karim Tordher emphasized the pivotal role of the modern Gems Centre in driving economic progress, anticipating a boost in exports, job creation, and revenue generation. Recognizing Peshawar’s strategic importance as a hub for precious stone trade in the region, the establishment of this center is poised to catalyze further growth and prosperity in the province.
