ISLAMABAD:

Breastfeeding can decrease the risk of ovarian cancer further underlining its significance, according to a research survey released by the World Health Organisation (WHO) on Tuesday.

Breastfeeding is a powerful public health intervention with profound implications for the health and well-being of both infants and mothers. It plays a crucial role in combatting malnutrition in children, strengthening immunity, and enhancing maternal well-being.

Pakistan has high levels of stunting (too short for age) at 40 per cent and wasting (low weight for height) at 17%. Despite its manifold benefits, exclusive breastfeeding rates for six months in Pakistan remain suboptimal at 48 per cent.

The major reasons for suboptimal exclusive breastfeeding for six months are myths and misconceptions including the concept of “gutti”, deceptive marketing from the formula milk industry, the lack of awareness and education on the importance of breastfeeding and the lack of conducive and supportive environment for breastfeeding in the community and at the workplaces.

Healthcare providers including lady health workers, family members including husbands, mothers-in-laws and employers have a great role to play to ensure the promotion of breastfeeding.
