RAWALPINDI:

Since the implementation of a ban on riding motorcycles without helmets, the demand for new helmets has significantly increased in the garrison city. This surge in demand has led to some traders taking advantage of the situation by raising the prices of helmets.

Motorcyclists in Rawalpindi have faced action from city traffic police officials for riding without helmets.

Mohammad Naveed, a daily commuter from Dhoke Syedan to Siddiqui Chowk, shared his experience, stating that not wearing a helmet results in a fine, and buying one comes at a high cost. The price of a helmet that used to be sold at Rs600 a few weeks ago is now available at Rs1,600, without any justification.

Helmet shops on Murree Road are witnessing large crowds, and traders are profiting unlawfully from citizens, he said. Rohail Shan, a student attending coaching classes near Faizabad, mentioned that previously, traffic police did not enforce helmet regulations. However, now motorcyclists are required to wear helmets, and amidst this situation, only businessmen seem to benefit.

He added that it is crucial for the district administration to take action against those who are unreasonably profiting from the sale of helmets.

Javed Iqbal, a citizen, highlighted the increase in helmet thefts along with the rising prices of new helmets since the ban was implemented. Helmet thieves steal helmets from parked motorcycles and sell them at lower prices on various highways.

Citizens who adhere to the helmet ban are facing difficulties, and the administration should take appropriate measures to address this issue.

On the other hand, the City Traffic Police (CTP) has so far issued 1,500 fine tickets as part of their ongoing campaign against motorcyclists who fail to use safety helmets. A spokesperson for CTP said they had also launched an awareness campaign to promote the use of safety helmets among motorcyclists.
