Private sector leases vacant cages in Punjab zoos

Wildlife experts voice concerns over initiative

The first phase of leasing vacant cages and enclosures in government zoos of Punjab to the private sector has concluded, but the results have been less than satisfactory. Punjab Wildlife has embarked on a new model by offering leases for empty cages and enclosures in zoos and wildlife parks. In the initial phase, four lion cages, nine deer enclosures, and 18 birdhouses were put up for open auction at the Lahore Wildlife Park. Although the private sector showed limited interest, Punjab Wildlife managed to lease a tiger cage, a deer enclosure, and a birdhouse.

Punjab Wildlife Lahore Region Deputy Director Tanveer Ahmed Janjua stated that this unique project invites participation from the private sector. Animal and bird cages and enclosures are leased for a period of three years. The tiger cage was leased for Rs. 1,260,000 per year, while the animal enclosure and birdhouse were leased for Rs. 240,000 and Rs. 180,000 per year, respectively.

The lease amount will increase by ten percent in the second and third year. Private sector individuals are permitted to keep various species of animals and birds in these leased spaces, enabling breeding and buying and selling activities. Additionally, it has been reported that animals and birds can also be acquired from government zoos.

However, wildlife experts have raised concerns about this initiative. Wildlife conservator Badar Munir stated, "Involving the private sector in government zoos will undoubtedly bring economic benefits to the government and provide entertainment for tourists. There are also concerns regarding theft and the exchange of animals and birds." Munir suggested that instead of providing cages and enclosures to the private sector, the government should consider transferring surplus animals, particularly lions, from Lahore Zoo and Safari Park to Jallu Park.
