Neglected zoo animals

The appalling living conditions of the animals at Karachi Zoo are leading to their deteriorating health and well-being

April 02, 2023

The recent exposé of the dire conditions at Karachi Zoo is a distressing reminder of the sorry state of animal welfare in Pakistan. The appalling living conditions of these animals — which include malnutrition, unclean water and cramped enclosures — are leading to their deteriorating health and well-being and constitute grave violations. This is unacceptable and must be addressed urgently.

It is the responsibility of the zoo management to ensure that the animals are provided with an appropriate environment that meets their basic needs. They must be provided adequate space, access to clean water and food, and proper medical care. However, reports indicate that the animals in Karachi Zoo are suffering from neglect, malnutrition and apathy from the staff.

It is not just the moral responsibility of the zoo management to ensure the well-being of the animals in their care, but it is also crucial for the education and awareness of the visitors. A visit to the zoo is often the only opportunity for many people to see animals up close, and it is essential that they leave with a positive and respectful attitude towards them. The animals in Karachi Zoo are not only being deprived of their basic needs, but are also being subjected to neglect and cruelty, which is likely to have a significant impact on the visitors’ attitudes towards animals.

It is essential that the authorities take immediate action to improve the conditions. Additionally, they must also invest in proper training for the staff to ensure that they are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide the animals with appropriate care. It is time for Pakistan to step up and demonstrate that it values the lives and well-being of all creatures, great and small. If this seems like a formidable task then it is better to close down all zoos across the country.
