Officer facing probes gets new appointment

With this appointment, Sheikh would be responsible for the procurement of goods for development schemes worth millions

The federal government has ordered an inquiry into the appointment of Sindh Industrial and Trading Estate (SITE) Deputy Chief Engineer Nabil Ahmed Sheikh, who is on bail in National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and anti-corruption cases, as SITE's industry procurement chairman.

With this appointment, Sheikh would be responsible for the procurement of goods for development schemes worth million for sites located in Hyderabad, Kotri, Nooriabad and Super Highway as well as Karachi.

Sheikh is facing several cases, including allegations of corruption in a treatment plant costing million. Another case related to the corruption of Rs4 billion in a School Education Department, where he was an engineer, is being heard by an accountability court.

The Federal Planning and Development Department has called for his immediate suspension. It has issued orders to the secretary of the provincial industry department and the managing director of SITE to take action against him over inquiries of corruption of billions in ongoing and completed development schemes.

Federal Planning and Development Deputy Chief Zulfiqar Gul Memon said in the written instructions that the case against Sheikh for corruption of million rupees was with the anti-corruption department in Jamshoro.

It stated that Sheikh had been nominated in a bomb attack case as well. He was released on bail by the anti-corruption court due to health issues during his detention, it said.
