Directorate of Customs Intelligence and Investigation Karachi has seized betele nut and non-customs paid vehicles worth Rs47.5 million rupees during its anti-smuggling campaign.
Sources told Express that the Director of Customs Intelligence Karachi, Saqif Saeed, had received information that an attempt was being made to smuggle large quantities of chhalia through a dumper.
In addition, the directorate has seized four smuggled and tampered vehicles worth Rs25 million in other operations. Regarding the betele nut (chhalia) a raiding team was formed under the leadership of Deputy Director Inamullah Wazir to monitor the Northern Bypass area.
During this time, a suspicious dumper was stopped and searched, and unhygienic smuggled chhalia was recovered from the dumper.
Sources said the smugglers in two vehicles in front and behind also monitored the said dumper, which strongly resisted the raiding team during the raid. After calling for more personnel from the Directorate, the commotion was controlled, the dumper was seized, and many smuggled chhalia bags were seized. It was hidden under rocks.
The value of the seized car and vehicle is estimated to be Rs22.5 million.
Customs Intelligence has arrested an accused in this action, registered a case and started an investigation.
