Two suicide bombers were killed outside the peace committee office in Dera Ismail Khan district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) on Tuesday.
Police told The Express Tribune that the peace committee office is located in Saddar area and the guards deployed for its security opened fire at two suicide bombers who had been sent to target the head of the committee.
“Both the bombers exploded with a big bang which was heard for miles when the guards opened fire at them,” said a police official, adding that following the incident Saddar Road was closed for all kinds of vehicular traffic.
“The office of Noor Alam Mehsud was attacked by two bombers but the peace committee volunteers thwarted the attempt successfully,” he said, adding that Noor Alam Mehsud is the head of Mehsud Peace Committee in South Waziristan tribal district.
“All the peace committees of South Waziristan have their offices in DI Khan,” he added.
A large number of police and security forces reached the site soon after the attack and began a door to door search for the facilitators and handlers of the bombers.
Several were arrested on suspicion. Police registered an FIR and opened investigation in the case.
DI Khan is one of the most troubled districts of K-P where 15 policemen were gunned down in targeted attacks last year.
