In connection with the anti-dengue campaign, various activities are being conducted at Islamia University Bahawalpur (IUB), under the directives of Vice-Chancellor Dr Athar Mahboob.
Chief Medical Officer Dr Muhammad Usman Cheema said on Sunday that the initial symptoms of dengue were severe fever and body pains, due to which there is no appetite and pain starts behind the eyes and spreads to other sides of the head. Spots appear on the body, similar to measles. Breathing is difficult and the patient endures severe abdominal pain, sending them into a state of shock, he added. Dr Cheema suggested that the patient should be given plenty of juices, soups and milk, in addition to a normal diet and complete rest.
Regarding preventive measures, he recommended that houses, offices and shops should be cleaned and sprayed with mosquito repellent up to thrice a week. Dengue mosquitoes breed in clean water, so containers for collecting clean water such as pitchers, drums and tanks should be properly covered.
The audience were urged against allowing water to collect on roofs, plant beds, pots, old pots and other areas inside houses. Meanwhile, cleaning and spraying arrangements are being ensured in all teaching and administrative departments, hostels and colonies.
