President Dr Arif Alvi on Tuesday called for framing laws keeping in view the larger good of the society, coupled with a fair implementation of law and a proportional punishment and reward system.

He made the remarks while addressing a group of students from Hamdard School of Law, Hamdard University, at Aiwan-e-Sadr, according to an official statement. It added that First Lady Begum Samina Arif Alvi was also present on the occasion.

President Alvi further said while dispensing speedy and inexpensive justice, religious values needed to be understood with the right reference and context.

He added that the people deserved speedy and inexpensive justice but in reality, there were long delays in the dispensation of the same which violated the basic fundamental rights and had many social implications such as mental and physical pain and unrest in the society.

He further said that justice is of very little use if it is not dispensed in time, adding that "justice delayed is justice denied".

The president stressed that although efforts had been made to provide speedy and inexpensive justice to the people but still a lot needs to be done.

According to him, the use of modern technology, DNA profiling and the adoption of scientific investigation methods and techniques could be helpful in the speedy dispensation of justice.

He emphasised imparting training to parliamentarians to make them fully capable to contribute their qualified input in the framing of laws which truly reflected the aspirations of people and had a positive impact on the society.

President Alvi recalled Hakeem Mohammed Saeed, founder of Hamdard University, as an icon, man of vision, educationist and entrepreneur who rendered remarkable services to the society.

He advised the young law students to observe the highest moral and ethical standards in performing their duties and become a voice for the voiceless and help in providing them inexpensive and speedy justice, especially to the poor and the deprived segments of the society.
