DIJKOT:

A man allegedly shot his daughter-in-law dead following a quarrel over her not having children. In the case filed by Osama Mazhar, a resident of ZE Madina Town, it was stated that his sister Iram, 43, was married 17 years ago to Jahanzeb, a resident of Fazal Chowk Samanabad.

Iram had no children, but she adopted one child who is seven years old. Her husband Jahanzeb had gone to Toba Tek Singh when her father-in-law, Muhammad Yusuf, quarreled with her for not having children.

Later, Yusuf allegedly shot Iram with a 30-bore revolver and seriously injured her. After medical aid, she was shifted to General Hospital Samanabad where she succumbed to her injuries. Samanabad police handed over the body to her heirs and started raids to find the accused.

Murder among families, particularly of in-laws, is an unfortunately common occurrence within Punjab. In February of this year, a man allegedly murdered his sisterin-law after suspecting her of being unfaithful.

While her husband was out of the country on business, the 38-year-old victim allegedly had an affair with another man within the village. The accused, Asif, had told her repeatedly to stop seeing the man, but she refused. Asif allegedly shot her dead and fled the scene.

This incident became another honour killing recorded within the province, as well as another murder within a family. Separately in April, an accused opened fire upon the houses of his family and inlaws, killing six people altogether. His mother-in-law and father-in-law were among the deceased. The police arrested the accused, Abid, who claimed that his family and in-laws had tortured his son, which motivated him to carry out the act. Further investigation revealed that the suspect was addicted to Ice, or methamphetamine.
