After Ranveer Singh, Shahid Kapoor and Randeep Hooda, actor Akshay Kumar is the latest Bollywood bigwig to join the “pawri”. The Welcome actor took to the caption of an Instagram post to quote the infamous meme, causing the original “pawri” girl Dananeer to have a major fan moment. Deeming Akshay her “childhood favourite”, the Sinf e Aaahan actor took to her Instagram story to share a screenshot of Akshay’s post.
The Bollywood actor used the meme in the caption of a post promoting his latest offering Atrangi Re. He wrote underneath a video of him and director Aanand L Rai, “Yeh main hoon, yeh Aanand L Rai hain, aur yeh meri jaadu dikhaane ki chhoti si koshish hai. Aap bhi dekhiye hamari film Atrangi Re jo ab aapke TV pe aa rahi hai kal. [This is me, this is Aanand L Rai, and this is our attempt at showing you some magic. Watch our film Atrangi Re which will be available on your TV tomorrow.]”
Sharing a screenshot of the post to her Instagram story, Dananeer wrote, “My childhood favourite Akshay Kumar hopping on the pawri ho rahi hai trend is giving me life.”
The short video shot by Dananeer Mobeen in the Nathaigali mountains of northern Pakistan and uploaded onto Instagram shows a group of youngsters enjoying themselves by the roadside.
Swinging around the device she is filming on, Dananeer gestures behind her and says in Urdu, "This is our car, this is us, and this is our party taking place."
Seemly innocuous, she deliberately mispronounces the English word “party” as pawri to poke fun at South Asians who adopt Western accents. It immediately struck a chord in both India and Pakistan, sparking top trending hashtags on social media, and garnering millions of views and hundreds of spin-offs.
