On behalf of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi chief Engr Hafiz Naeemur Rehman, his counsel, Saifuddin Advocate, served a legal notice to Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah - demanding the executive head of the province to withdraw the bill recently passed by the provincial assembly to amend the local government law.
The JI leader has already opposed the amendments, citing them an attempt to further subdue powers of the local government setup in Sindh.
According to the contents of the bill, the JI leader asked the chief minister to withdraw the clauses of the bill that violate the constitution within seven days, failing to which the party will approach the higher judiciary against the controversial law as well as the bill recently passed by the assembly.

The legal notice asked the chief minister to amend the local government law in accordance with the provisions of the constitution.
The notice quoting article 32 of the constitution read that the state is bound to encourage the local government setup run by elected representatives.
The legal notice also mentioned the article 140A of the constitution, highlighting that each and every province will have to establish a local government system, and political, administrative and financial responsibilities and authorities in this regard will be devolved to elected representatives.
