HYDERABAD:

The Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Association (FAPUASA) has decried the indifference being demonstrated by the central and provincial governments in the face of the financial crunch which the higher education institutions are currently encountering.

Addressing a press conference after the conclusion of the rally at Hyderabad press club, FAPUASA Sindh President Prof Liaquat Ali Tunio said the faculty and other employees of the public sector universities have been greatly distressed by the financial situation of higher educational institutions.

"Like the federal government, the Sindh government is also ignoring the universities in the province," bemoaned Tunio. He complained that the administrative management in the universities in Sindh also appears to be at their lowest ebb. He claimed that the aversion of the Sindh government to increase the annual budget of the varsities or to provide them with some bailout packages is jeopardizing the financial stability of the higher education institutions.

He argued that resolution of problems concerning the teaching community and other employees of universities have been pending for years but the government has not been showing any interest. FAPUASA Sindh General Secretary Asif Ali Samo demanded that the annual budget of the public sector universities should be enhanced and that bailout packages should also be immediately announced.

The association also called for a grant of the disparity reduction allowance. They warned that they would stage a protest in Karachi if their demands are not heard.
