ISLAMABAD:

The government’s chief whip has started contacting its lawmakers, including from the coalition parties, in its effort to constitute a quorum in today (Friday)’s National Assembly session.

The development came on Thursday after the lower house session was yet again adjourned over lack of quorum for the fourth time since the beginning of the fourth parliamentary year.

According to sources, despite the opposition’s support for a parliamentary committee to consult on electoral reforms, the pressure remains on the government as its agenda is being severely affected if the quorum is not met.

Moreover, the motion for the establishment of a parliamentary committee on electoral reform also fell victim to the quorum.

They claimed that a few MNAs have reservations related to such a committee. Sources said that despite JUI-F leader Shahida Akhtar Ali’s participation in talks with NA Speaker Asad Qaiser, the party is still not satisfied on the issue.

This development prompted the government to start talks with the lawmakers to ensure the house quorum for completing its agenda.
